I had zero aspirations to sign up and pay for yet another streaming service until Apple+ came out with Ted Lasso. If you’re living under a rock, Ted lass was this show that was about an American football coach who moves to England to coach a sport he’s never known. Deeper down, Ted Lasso was a really great story about a soccer organization becoming whole both on and off the pitch. Coach Lasso’s innumerable dad jokes and nuggets of wisdom helped make Ted Lasso one of the best shows. People on the internet will always find something to gripe about, but I truly believe Ted Lasso was the breath of fresh air we all needed in seemingly unprecedented times.
Here are my favorite nuggets from the show:
I believe in communism. Rom-Communism, that is. If Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan can go through some heartfelt struggles and still end up happy, then so can we.”
season 2, episode 5
An ode to one of the great romantic movies of all time – You’ve Got Mail and a gentle reminder that we all go through things, but cannot and should not lose sight that the destination can still be happiness despite the arduous journey to get there.
You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. Y’know why? It’s got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish.”
Season 1, episode 2
Look – I’m not taking credit for this idea of being a goldfish because every time I ever used it prior was more in a sardonic way of speaking about someone’s memory or attention span. Ted Lasso flipped it for me though in the way he does – essentially don’t sweat the small stuff.
Ice cream’s the best. It’s kind of like seeing Billy Joel live. Never disappoints.”
season 1, episode 9
Preach.
Your body is like day-old rice. If it ain’t warmed up properly, something real bad could happen.”
season 1, episode 9
If you’re over the age of 30, you already know.
You deserve someone who makes you feel like you’ve been struck by fucking lightning. Don’t you dare settle for ‘fine'”
season 2, episode 1
Applicable to all ages, but again, definitely speaking to my 30+ year old friends.
Lads – remember. It’s just poopy. Let it flow.”
season 3, episode 1
A gentle reminder to not get bogged down in the shit, whether it be literally or figuratively.
I hope either all of us, or none of us are judged by the actions of our weakest moments, but rather by the strength we show when and if we are ever given a second chance.”
season 3, episode 12
If you’re lucky enough to get a re-do, don’t squander it.
Human beings are never going to be perfect, Roy. The best we can do is keep asking for help and accepting it when you can. And if you keep doing that, you’ll always be moving towards better.”
season 3, episode 12
Knowing our limitations and cultivating a village of support is essential. All we can do is our best.
Belief doesn’t just happen because you hang something up on a wall. It comes from in here – you know, from up here and down here. The only problem is that we all got so much junk flowing floating through us, a lot of the time we end up getting in our own way. Y’know crap like envy, or fear… shame. I don’t want to mess around with that shit anymore. Y’know what I mean? Do you?… hell no. You know what I want to mess around with? The belief that I matter – you know, regardless of what I do or don’t achieve. Or the belief that we all deserve to be loved, whether we’ve been hurt or whether we’ve maybe hurt somebody else. But what about the belief of hope? That’s what I want to mess with. believing that things can get better. That I can get better. That we will get better. Oh man, to believe in yourself, to believe in one another – man that’s fundamental to being alive. If you can do that, if each of you can truly do that, can’t nobody rip that apart. See you Monday.”
season 3, episode 5
Believe in Believe.
